I was contacted towards the end of 2007 by Oliver and Sue Brathwait, customers who had previously bought work of me with an idea for a new installation.
They wanted some screens to go around their newt pond, a sort of 'Quintich' was how Oliver described them as there were to be five of them. I went to have a look at the pond, the screens were to be 2.5x2m each. A BIG job. We had a lot of discussions about it and emails with sketches went back and forth until I had an idea of what was wanted, big and bold was the main design brief. It was agreed that I would plasma cut them out of mild steel and that they would be left to rust naturally. In the end it was decided to have three screens with representations of plant life on them and two with newts.
I had a friend, Ash Lloyd do me a sketch of the newts to be cut into the screens. This was a huge help as it gave me anatomically correct source material.

I then got on with cutting them out with the plasma cutter and mounting them in frames, bearing in mind the effect of wind and keeping a sound structure.
Eventually the work was finished and I was able to get them installed with the asistance of a friend, here we see me putting the finishing touches to the whole installation. At this point we realised just how big these things were and how well they fitted into their space.

Below are a couple of pictures of the whole installation. The first image shows the effects of the reflection in the water, this had not been planned for but gives a fantastic effect.

The second highlights the strong image against the sky.

The last two photographs show the newts in silhouette against the early evening sky.

Overall we were all well pleased with the whole job. It was a fascinating job for me as Oliver and Sue's original ideas were so different from mine, yet I was able to interpret their ideas into steel.
This is a new area of work and one that I am willing to take further, if you are interested in commissioning a project of this type please contact me for more information.
